Dymola for academic research and teaching

A number of academic packages are available for Dymola to meet the needs of researchers, teachers and students. Because Dymola provides an open modelling environment based on the Modelica modelling language it is a great tool for teaching and research.

The academic versions of Dymola are identical in function to the full commercial products. This enables researchers and students to work with Dymola and become familiar with the Modelica modelling language and the wide range of application libraries available. Dymola is being applied in research across a wide number of domains including Automotive, Power generation and distribution, Aerospace, Robotics, fluid systems and much more.

To enable universities to quickly ramp up to teaching using Dymola and Modelica there is a library of teaching material available from the Modelica Association.

The open and extendible nature of Dymola and Modelica makes it a research and teaching friendly tool. The graphical modelling environment makes it easy for students to get started with simulation and the open access to the underlying Modelica language gives the students visibility of the model equations to understand how the math courses relate to simulation. For research, the open and extendible nature of the Modelica libraries in Dymola makes it easy to build models of new ideas and technologies and assess them within a proven simulation tool.

The University of Warwick uses Dymola

The University of Warwick is just one of many universities where Dymola is being used for both teaching and research purposes. Here are some examples:

Teaching

  • 1st year engineering students experience Dymola as part of their “Design for Function” module where they use Dymola to create a thermal model of a house
  • 3rd year students studying Systems Engineering carry out a design project using Dymola to build a hybrid electric driveline model
  • Dymola licenses are available for student use within the School of Engineering’s computer labs enabling students to use Dymola on any other project during their studies at Warwick
  • Dymola was selected because the concepts of simulation can be introduced at an early stage.  With previous simulation tools it was necessary to wait until the physics and mathematics modules had been studied before being able to introduce simulation

Academic research

  • Dymola is used by Ph.D students and research staff within the School of Engineering and WMG
  • Projects relate to plant modelling of chassis and powertrain systems including hybrids. Dymola manages the modelling of these complex systems and provides a convenient interface to Simulink for integration with control algorithms

Motorsport Research

Dymola and the motorsport solutions from Claytex are used in Formula 1, Indycar, NASCAR and many other race series to model all aspects of a car. The same solutions that are applied by these teams are available for use in academic research and projects like Formula SAE at substantially discounted prices. When applied by motorsport teams the resulting vehicle models are used in lapsim, HIL, driving simulators and for desktop analysis.
