Electrical and energy management systems for the Aerospace industry
Energy management and the adoption of electrical systems within aircraft is being driven by the need to improve the environmental efficiency of aircraft. The European Clean Sky project is one large scale research project that is investigating these new technologies with the aim of producing technology demonstrators by 2013.
Dymola’s multi-domain modelling and simulation capability supports the evaluation of new technologies by enabling the electrical, mechanical, thermal and control aspects of the system to be modelled in one simulation tool. This enables the engineers to investigate the interactions between the different elements of the system and optimise the overall performance.
Using a combination of libraries the current aircraft systems can be modelled and then the new technologies introduced to compare the system performance and efficiency. The Hydraulics library, Modelica Standard Library and Smart Electric Drives Library all provide useful components for modelling the current aircraft systems which are largely Hydraulic and then investigating new ideas that utilise electrical actuators and alternative power generation, storage and distribution technologies.
Modelica Standard Library
The Modelica Standard Library provides electrical component models such as resistors and capacitors in addition to the mechanical and control libraries that can be used to model the aircraft mechanical systems and control systems.
Smart Electric Drives Library
The Smart Electric Drives library provides components for modelling any type of electrical drive including the energy storage device, power electronics and motor models. The library is compatible with the Modelica Standard Library enabling the models provided to be extended using the Modelica Standard Library.
